This sculpture of a dodo, richly adorned with Delftware decorations, is a creation by artist Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk. The artwork, part of the Heinen Delftware collection, is called "The Blue Dodo." At first glance, a dodo and Delftware seem to have nothing in common, but those who delve deeper into history will discover there is indeed a connection. Pepijn enjoys delving into the history of Asia and the Netherlands, combining old stories with unique objects and impressions he encounters during his travels. This is how he came across the story of the dodo. A touching, adorable bird that cannot fly and has virtually no natural predators. Until 17th-century Dutch traders arrived on the island and severely disrupted the habitat of this legendary bird. The animal was eaten, new predators like monkeys and pigs were introduced, and a few dodos were brought aboard to give as gifts to emperors or to be viewed as curiosities. All this led to the dodo's extinction. The Blue Dodo is a time traveler, who travels the world as an adventurous loner, looking for kindred spirits and a new home.
